Spiriting him away from the mental institution he has lived in for years, Charlie demands a fair share of his late father's fortune from his brother's trustees.

Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for his portrayal of the autistic brother, and the film also won Academy Awards for best film, director and screenplay. The film had a troubled history, with three other directors (Martin Brest, Sydney Pollack and Steven Spielberg ) involved before Barry Levinson came on board.
Co-star Valeria Golino is now better known for her starring role in the spoofs Hot Shots! and Hot Shots! Part Deux.
