THE ALDERLEY EDGE FLOWER SHOW

on Regional Programme Northern

View in Radio Times

An eye-witness account by John F. Leeming
Alderley Edge is a Cheshire village little more than ten miles from Manchester, but its Show is firmly established as one of the leading horticultural exhibitions in the country-one that brings together leading exhibitors from all over the kingdom. Started in 1895 by half a dozen ardent horticulturalists, the exhibition has a wonderful record for a village society run entirely on a voluntary basis. Its claim to be the largest one-day flower show in England has gone unchallenged for many years.
John F. Leeming, who. is to talk about the Show, is well known as the author of ' Claudius the Bee', and also as a pioneer of the light-aeroplane club movement. Leeming is a great gardener himself, and his book ' The Garden Grows ' tells how he created from a field his now famous garden at Bowdon, which is not very far from Alderley Edge.
