25 Years Ago - 'Tonight'

on BBC One London

Introduced by Cliff Michelmore

Tonight, the first daily magazine programme on British television, began a quarter of a century ago today. Started to fill the 'toddlers' truce', the tv-less hour between 6.0 and 7.0 pm, Tonight quickly became a household word. The programme helped to shape the national mood in an age of change and growing mistrust of authority. Tonight we illustrate what the programme stood for, how it worked and what it led to, with the help of those who worked on it: the production team led by Donald Baverstock, its creator, with Derek Hart, Geoffrey Johnson Smith, Macdonald Hastings, Fyfe Robertson, Alan Whicker, Trevor Philpott, Jack Gold, Ned Sherrin, Peter Black, Bernard Levin and Cy Grant, Robin Hall and Jimmie Macgregor
