The Bologna School
All the great cities of Northern Italy prided themselves on the vitality of their cultural life, and in the 17th and 18th centuries, rivalry between them was intense. In Bologna, the Cathedral of San Petronio was the centre of musical activity that led eventually to the emergence of the concerto.
Today: its origins in the rise of the Sonata da chiesa.
