Songs of Chivalry

on BBC Radio 3

From its origins in feudal allegiance, the medieval ethic of chivalry was transformed in the late 11th century into something more noble. It was sung-poetry which voiced this change, and this concert traces its development from the quixotic Guilhem IX of Aquitaine to the trouveres of Northern France, and the innovations of de la Halle and Machaut.
