Women of Note
Composer Elizabeth Maconchy is 80 this month. In the late 1920s she was turned down for the Mendelssohn Scholarship and was told it didn't matter because 'you will only get married and never write another note'. Over 40 years later, her daughter Nicola LeFanu did win the Scholarship. But have things really improved for women composers?
