The Tramp and the Philosopher
He was born 85 years ago in the East End of London.
His father, a music-hall artist, died of drink; his mother's mind gave way under the grind of poverty. His childhood, spent in the Shadow of the workhouse, was near-Dickensian.
This week he goes to Buckingham Palace. The man who created the little tramp in baggy pants and a bowler hat is now Sir Charles Chaplin.
