The Jazzin' Violin: 1: Ragging the Scale

on BBC Radio 3

Although the violin is still considered to be a rarity in the field of jazz, it has made a contribution to every generation, from the days of minstrels to the 1990s. Russell Davies reflects on the history of the jazzin' violin.

The violin played an important part in the early ragtime orchestras that predated jazz. The first great violin soloist established himself - Joe Venuti.
