Sullivan composed incidental music to four of Shakespeare's plays — The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, The Merrv Wives of Windsor, and Henry VIII. All these were commissioned in the early days before fame had come to him via The Savoy Theatre, but not before he had given hint of a fine flair for the theatre. The incidental music to The Merchant of Venice was written for a revival in 1871 of Shakespeare's play at the Prince's Theatre, Manchester.

Overture, Di Ballo
In 1870, when Sullivan was twenty-eight, he was invited to write a work for the Birmingham Festival ; the composition he submitted was the Overture ' Di Ballo '. Consisting entirely of dance tunes, the music is very light in character and the orchestration is full of delicate effects of colour.
