Soames pays a visit to Jolyon's house and finds him with Irene. He declares that he will bring disgrace on them unless they promise not to see each other. They refuse. Soames tells his father and mother he is going to divorce Irene.
Jolyon receives a telegram telling him that his son Jolly has died. Soames also learns that Winifred's son, Val, has married Jolyon's daughter, Holly.
Soames's decree nisi is pronounced and the case is given much press publicity. Despairingly, in the following six months, Soames woos and marries the French girl, Annette Lamotte.
