Born Mary Anne Evans and later calling herself Marion and Mrs Lewis, George Eliot died as Mrs John Cross. One of her first stories features Caterina, an Italian singer, and many of her famous books include portraits of musicians. Her last novel, Daniel Deronda, includes a portrait drawn from the life of Liszt.
