The Archive Hour: The Heavens Reflect Our Labours

on BBC Radio 4 FM

During the last century, towns such as Scunthorpe, Sheffield, Port Talbot and Consett provided Britain with steel and iron, the basic raw materials without which ships, railways, girders, cars, armaments, and machines of all sorts cannot be manufactured. Martin Wainwright examines how life has changed in towns like these, where whole communities came to rely on the making of metal from the most basic raw material - iron ore.
