The Sunday Feature: Cornemusiques

on BBC Radio 3

The Bagpipe Music of France French bagpipes come in many guises: the musette, grande comemuse and cabrette among them. Played by shepherds in the 13th century, royal courtiers in the 18th and the early exponents of jazz music in the 1920s, their popularity is still growing today. Jean-Pierre Rasle has mastered all these instruments and, with a band of seven musicians and observations from writers including
Rabelais and George Sand , he reveals the extraordinary story of the pipes of France.
