Guitar Greats: Pete Townshend

on BBC Radio 1 England

Introduced by Alexis Korner
To be an outstanding guitarist is not necessarily to be a solo virtuoso player.
Pete Townshend spent a large part of his early career trying to compensate for what he considered lack of technical expertise with dramatic on-stage gestures. It was only when he began to explore synthesiser and keyboards that his most exquisite guitar-work began to emerge.
Pete Townshend has spent a lot of time destroying guitars - which is strange for a man who loves them so much! Even after this programme he will remain something of an enigma.
