The Scone is a village green on May Day, 1775, with village lads and lasses dancing round the Maypole. They think and talk of little else, however, but the great question, ' Who will win Squire Goodwin's legacy of £100? ' This will be given to the couple who get married on May 1, provided that they make a choice of each other that is both fitting and free.
