The Dilemma of a She-Novelist
The author of The Life and Loves of a She-Devil began her writing life creating stereotypes of dutiful wives in an advertising agency. She has gone on to write countless television plays, short stories and novels, many of which, like Praxis, Puffball and The Shrapnel Academy contain savage statements of women's thinking about themselves, their men and male-dominated society.
This Bookmark special explores the comic, fantastic and pessimistic vision of this highly original writer. Fay Weldon 's concerns have broadened now to include women's role within the state, but constantly she addresses the central dilemma for women - how to reconcile the biological urges of child-birth with the need for freedom and personal fulfilment outside the home.
