ARNOLD SCHOENBERG b. 1874, d. 1951
One of the dominating and most controversial figures of 20th-century music, Schoenberg established the 12-tone system of composition, a technique in which all notes are considered of equal status. Born in Vienna, he settled in America in 1933, and programmes this week give a chronological survey of some of his music.
