Piano Sonata in G minor, Op. 22 played by Benno Moiseiwitsch. (Gramophone records)
Nicholas Medtner , the Russian composer, belongs to the school of Glazunov and Rachmaninoff. A brilliant pianist himself he writes for the keyboard with fine understanding and effect, and the whole of his fairly considerable output is concerned with the piano. He has written seven piano sonatas, of which the Sonata in G minor is the third. It is as impressive in construction as it is expressive in feeling. The music is essentially romantic, and like his 'Fairy-Tales ' for piano, suggests a fantastic world of ancient heroic legend— the world of the Nibelungs, gnomes, and mountain kings.
