A search for the meaning of The Trinity
The Christian doctrine of God as three ' persons ' in one ' substance ' was formulated in a ferment of theological controversy in the first few centuries. Orthodox Christians have always claimed that it is a revealed and Biblical doctrine; dissenters have denied this, and regarded it as unnecessary as well as incomprehensible.
ANTHONY PHILLIPS of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, investigates ways of speaking about the Trinity today. Does the doctrine have anything to say to the new interest in religious experience: to political and social alienation in the West, or to our understanding of personal relationships?
