The title The Long Portage may perhaps puzzle those who have forgotten how Fenimore Cooper 's travellers had to go overland, canoe and all, when the rapids blocked their journeys along North American rivers. The author of this programme-Len Peterson, a well-known Canadian radio writer now serving as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Army-has taken his ' portage ' to be a traveller's overland trip across Canada from the European to the Pacific war zone. Through the ears of this traveller listeners will meet new friends and new experiences, and will perhaps shed one or two of their past misconceptions as the varied scenes of Canadian life and the varied outlook of her people are brought to him. When his ' Long Portage ' is over our traveller takes ship on the Pacific and looks back on the rich pattern of Canadian life.
