Ray Charles - Man and Music

on BBC Radio 2

1/4. Stuart Maconie pays tribute to singer Ray Charles, who died on 10 June, aged 73. One of the more influential vocalists of the last century, Charles drew from gospel, blues, jazz and country to emerge as the definitive soul performer. Among his classics are I Got a Woman, What'd l Say, Hit the Road Jack, I Can't Stop Loving You, You Don't Know Me, Take These Chains from My Heart and, perhaps most notably, Georgia on My Mind. This series, which first aired in 2000, begins with a look at the singer's early years, with input from biographer Michael Lydon and Atlantic Records founders Jerry Wexler and Ahmet Ertgun.
