Rameau's Les Indes Galantes

on BBC Radio 3

Opera-ballet in a prologue and four acts. Libretto by LOUIS FUZELIER (first performed in 1735) ' Let observation with extensive view/Survey mankind from China to Peru,' commanded Dr Johnson. Rameau's opera-ballet is a bold attempt to obey this command, visiting Turkey, Peru, Persia and the forests of French Louisiana in the course of its travels. Roger Savage acts as a guide for this operatic journey. The programme includes music taken from the recordings by JEAN-CLAUDE MALGOIRE and JEAN-FRANCOIS PAILLARD as well as records of excerpts by the COLLEGIUM AUREUM, the LAMOUREUX CHAMBER ORCHESTRA and GERARD SOUZAY.
