Martha has been kidnapped by Steve the Squealer, and the diggers at Gabriel's Gully form a party to track him down. Pearson goes on ahead and in a small cave he finds Flash Harold - Steve's companion - dying after being shot by Steve. He leaves Harold and goes after Steve, who ambushes him - but Daniel Hathaway and George Gruff in turn take Steve by surprise, and in trying to escape he is swept away by the swirling river.
