3/5. The New Cross Fire. On 18 January 1981 a fire broke out at Yvonne Ruddock 's 16th birthday party in New Cross, London. Thirteen black teenagers, including Yvonne, were killed in what at the time was thought to be a racist attacK. Subsequent investigations seem to suggest that the rire started from within the party.
