Communist Party is in tatters: the survivors are clinging on to power, engaged in a bitter fight against the initiatives and challenges thrown down by an angry and confused Solidarity. Shortages and dislocation are growing worse, and winter draws in. Will the Poles be able to find a solution to their economic and political problems which will not provoke Soviet intervention?
