The Marks of the Cross

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Seven years ago Mrs Ethel Chapman was in hospital. She had multiple sclerosis and thought she was about to die.
In a state of depression, she prayed ' If there is a God, show me '. That night she had a vivid dream that she was being nailed to a cross. When she woke in the morning, the hospital staff found marks on her hands as if nails had been hammered through. For the rest of her life until her death a few weeks ago, Mrs Chapman retained the marks and similar ones appeared on her feet. They bled every Good Friday. She had ' stigmata 1, a rare mystical phenomenon.
Shortly before she died, she recorded an interview with Ted Harrison , in which she told about her experience, her remarkable life, and the effect the stigmata had had upon her and her faith. Producer CHRIS REES
