Edward Downes conducted the first performance in this country of Prokofiev's epic opera War and Peacein the 1960s. He introduces a substantial excerpt from the recent Kirov Opera production and talks to Humphrey Carpenter about the composer's transformation of ballet music, The Prodigal Son, into a symphony.
