Test Pilot

on BBC One London

We Never Use the Word
Dangerous
Since the dawn of aviation one manoeuvre has caused the death of more pilots and destroyed more aircraft than any other: spinning.
RAF pilots are forbidden to spin front-line aircraft intentionally, but the test pilot students have not only to investigate normal spinning - they also have to spin a Hunter upside down.
The exercise, one of the most demanding of the entire test pilots' course, is officially graded a 'high risk sortie' - at Boscombe Down they never use the word 'dangerous'. Narrator Andrew Faulds Film editor COLIN JONES Producer BRIAN JOHNSON
