Although oratory is generally assumed to be dying, dead or irrelevant to the new technologies of communication, hundreds of people are, in fact, making speeches every day of the week.
In the final programme of the series Melvyn Bragg finds the art flourishing in some unlikely quarters. Aspiring amateur orators no longer have to wait for a family wedding for their chance to make a speech, as the members of the Sidcup Rugby Club, the Ladies' Circle in Runcom, and the Knightsbridge Speakers' Club testify.
