5: Heiligenstadt Beethoven first refers to difficulties with his hearing in 1801. Ayear later, hopeful of recovery, he took himself off for six months to Heiligenstadt, a dozen miles from
Vienna. While he was there he wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he described his innermost despair.
