on BBC One London

(Reasons to be cheerful: page 10)

All about Me 8.30pm BBC1

This new sitcom ploughs roughly the same furrow as the hugely successful "My Family". It gets its comic situations from the daily minutiae of family life, although there is a significant difference here. One of the family members, a young boy, is profoundly disabled and we are asked to observe some of the goings-on from his perspective. He gives an occasional commentary, though this takes the form of an interior monologue, as the boy cannot speak.
This may make you feel slightly queasy, but it's unexploitative and the child's presence is treated very matter-of-factly by his mother (the splendid Meera Syal), his stepfather (Jasper Carrott) and his brothers and sisters. His disability is not explained and he is never a figure of fun. When he does make wry observations, we are asked to laugh with him, never at him. It might have been more interesting if all of "All about Me" was shown from the disabled child's perspective, but it isn't, and you get the feeling that it has simply bottled out of such a bold step.
What we actually have is a fairly routine comedy, full of tea-table banter and salt-of-the-earth observations - the Jasper Carrott character is such a cultural philistine and xenophobe you may wonder how on earth he ever managed to ensnare such a tolerant, thoughtful and intelligent wife.
