a feature about
August Strindberg (1849-1912) by MICHAEL MEYER with Alan Badel as Strindberg and Sian Phillips as Frida Uhl
' After 60 years of torture, I beg that I may be permitted to depart this life. The little joy I found in it was illusory or false. My work was the only thing worthwhile, but that was largely wasted, or useless, or harmful. Wives, children, home, were all a mockery. Women gave me happiness, but it soon evaporated. Once I sat in the sunlight, on a verandah, under the first green leaves of spring. Then came the darkness. Now I have nothing more to say.'
