The preservation of the great traditions of Renaissance church music seems to have been one of the Emperor's express intentions when founding *he Vienna Hofmusikkapelle on 7 July 1498. Many of Maximilian's musicians had been brought up in this tradition, and the Emperor himself beiog punctilious in his observances, there was a continual demand for liturgical music.
