Vladimir Ashkenazy
Joan Bakewell talks to one of the world's great performers. Though he now devotes a great deal of time to conducting. Ashkenazy first established his reputation as a pianist of piercing intelligence, capable of performing a vast repertoire. He talks about his upbringing in Gorky, being the son of a popular musician, his time at the Moscow Conservatoire, and his success at competitions, including the Chopin, Queen Elisabeth and Tchaikovsky. The programme includes early recordings of Chopin Etudes and part of Tchaikovsky's
