After a dramatic encounter with the stranger, Decimus Saxon, Micah and his friend Reuben find themselves drawn into the Civil War between the Protestant usurper the Duke of Monmouth and the Catholic King James II, and set off on the dangerous ride to throw in their lot with the Duke and his forces at Taunton.
