Mrs. Dale, the doctor's wife, records the daily happenings in the life of her family.
Mr. Fulton set off in the caravan with Fickling, but neither of them enjoyed it very much. Miss Garside showed Sally some newspaper gossip about Mr. Fulton and Rachel Guest. Mrs. Freeman planned to save Thompkins's horse, Nell, by collecting from the local children the amount needed to buy her from Mr. Waters. Dr. Dale brought home an old clock. There was more trouble between Captain and Grandfather Dale 's dog Robbie; finally Mrs. Freeman decided to move out of Virginia Lodge and take Captain with her until Grandfather Dale went home. She took a loom in Parkwood Hill, but kept her address a secret.
