5: Thaw. Though he had stayed out of trouble in the 1930s, in 1948 not even
Khachaturian escaped official censure in the cultural crackdown in favour of socialist realism. Only when Khrushchev began in 1956 to acknowledge Soviet communism's brutal past could artists begin to relax. Composition might then have become easier - but for Khachaturian it seemed to become more difficult.
