On March 18. 1967. the Torrey Canyon ruptured herself on the Seven Stones reef. releasing 119,000 tons of crude oil which perhaps killed 60,000 seabirds. Cleaning up the shores with detergent was described as a ' tragic comedy ' and inflicted insult upon injury to the marine and shore life-and cost the nation fl6 million.
