As he developed from the hunting and food-gathering stage, man had to break directly or indirectly into the existing natural associations of vegetation. Today very few land areas remain untouched-these principally on account of climatic limitations - and as a result of his activities comparatively few land areas used by man have maintained their original natural wealth.
