Afternoon Play: The House That Hearst Built

on BBC Radio 4 FM

It began as "a little something" on a Californian ranch, and ended up as "Hearst Castle", one of the most extravagant homes in the world, fruit of a three-decade-long collaboration between publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan. This drama documentary draws on their largely unpublished letters and telegrams, charting the growth of the "castle", with its cash-flow and labour problems, train loads of art and antiques, impossible deadlines and near bankruptcy.
