Charles Ives Weekend

on BBC Radio 3

The final concert of Radio 3's Ives festival, given yesterday at the Barbican, is a selection of songs, chosen by Thomas Hampson , which reveal more of the essential Ives that any other area of his output. Ives devoted much of his creative life to solo song, and in no genre did he achieve such diversity in style and approach, from simple, sentimental ballads to the most complex and dissonant philosophical discourses.
Thomas Hampson (baritone)
Dawn Upshaw (soprano) Craig Rutenberg (piano)
The theme of the first part of the programme is
Nature's Cycles, and the second part of the recital reflects The Human Cycle.
