Broken by two years in a Viet Cong prison, Johnny Bristol is released and sent back to an army hospital. Gradually he tries to reassemble his life-with the help of a nurse, whom he loves. His most important mission is to find his home town in Vermont - but it appears to have vanished from the face of the earth. Johnny is convinced that it is an army conspiracy and determines to discover the truth.
