The Bayreuth Ring: Das Rheingold

on BBC Radio 3

A music drama in four scenes, by Wagner (sung in German)

In the first instalment of Wagner's four-part epic, Der Ring des Nibelungen, the dwarf Alberich steals the Rhinemaidens' gold. He makes from it a magic helmet and a ring, which are in turn stolen from him by the god Wotan, in order to pay the building costs of Valhalla to the giants Fasolt and Fafner.
