Morning Performance

on BBC Radio 3

Tommy Pearson introduces two of the student ensembles from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester: the RNCM String Orchestra, conducted by Malcolm Layfield and former conducting fellow, Gary Walker; and the RNCM Wind Orchestra, conducted by Clark Rundell and Glenn Price. The Wind Orchestra has premiered many new works for the medium, and included this morning are David Bedford's Sun Paints Rainbows over the Vast Waves and Michael Daugherty's Niagara Falls. The String Orchestra includes two celebrated English works, Elgar's Serenade for Strings, Op20 and Tippett's Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli. There's also part of a composer masterclass, in which composer Roger Marsh prepares the String Orchestra for the premiere of Mark Hewitt's Reliquary for Christopher Tye.
