Another programme of Elizabethan ballads, arranged by Elizabeth Cole : April 20
Enthusiasm for ballads and ballad-tunes came so naturally to the Elizabethans that they had little difficulty in supplying the right melody to a given ballad on the spur of the moment, for the printed sheets of ballads rarely carried musical notation. These two programmes show how recent research has shed light on the ballad.tunes.in particular, which were often used in settings for lute, viols, and keyboard instruments by some of the greatest Elizabethan composers.
