Bob returned home one day very distressed because he thought he had knocked down Mrs. Mountford, who had previously threatened to complain about the noise he made on his motor-bike at two in the morning. Fortunately, Miss Marchbanks, who witnessed the so-called accident, revealed that Mrs. Mountford had not been touched by the motor-bike, but had tripped over the kerb and that, barring a few bruises, she was quite unhurt. Dr. and Mrs. Date went to spend the day with Dr. Laurie and his wife in the country. Mrs. Dale met with opposition when discussing her Christmas plana for the Children's Hospital with the bureaucratic Mrs. Crosby, wife of one of the hospital doctors, who felt nothing should be done until the local branch of the Hospital League had been properly organised. David got an increase in salary and he and Gwen decided to celebrate by going to the local Charity Ball for which Gwen should have a new dress. Sally had a mysterious letter from one Mr. Meadows saying he had a business proposition to put to her.
