TRIO
Trio in D, Op. 27
1 Allegro con brio. 2 Larghetto maestoso. 3 Allegro energico non presto
Donald Francis Tovey , pianist, composer, conductor, and Reid Professor of Music in Edinburgh University, was born at Eton in 1875. From his early years he displayed remarkable musical gifts. At the age of nineteen he was elected Lewis Nettleship scholar at Balliol College, Oxford, and four years later graduated in classical honours.
Tovey's scholarship is immense, and on the music of Bach and Beethoven he is undoubtedly the foremost English authority. Although his compositions reflect his classical learning and bias and show no inclination to follow the trend of twentieth-century musical thought, they are full of strong individuality.
