Stephen Hough
Joan Bakewell talks to pianist
Stephen Hough. Music was a magnet to the young Hough in Cheshire.
I When he was five, his mother bought him a two-octave piano, which he smashed to bits because it did not sound right. An upright replacement was found for L5, and a search through Yellow Pages began for a piano teacher. Today,
Stephen Hough talks about his early days and his experiences with various teachers. Music includes the last movement of Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No 1 in D minor and the Tarantella from
Liszt's Venezia e Napoli.
