Medical Matters
Schubert was 25 when he became aware that he had syphilis, the disease that would eventually kill him six years later. He was a torchbearer at Beethoven's funeral, and when drinking afterwards he proposed a toast to "the one of us who is first to follow after our Beethoven". Schubert died the following year.
