The Nightingale's to Blame
From the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield,
Simon Holt 's new opera, staged by Martin Duncan for Opera North at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Holt has based his first opera on a sensual and surreal play by Lorca. The elderly Don Perlimplin marries the young, beautiful and highly sexed Belisa, with predictable results. But who is the mysterious red-cloaked man who makes nightly visits to their garden, arousing Belisa's strongest desires?
